Issue#240: Android - Google Paid Apple $1 Billion USD to be the Default Search Engine on iOS

  • Obviously, bitter rivals can sometimes become strange bedfellows under the right circumstances. Google apparently paid through the nose to make the circumstances ripe for the strangest bedfellow team-up.

It's no secret that Google and Apple are bitter rivals, and it's also no secret that Apple agreed to use Google as the default search engine on iOS products because...

  • Issue#1846: Google Paid Apple $1 Billion in 2014 to be Default iOS Search Engine

It's common knowledge that Apple and Google have a monetary agreement that ensures Google's position as the default search engine on Apple's iOS devices, but the details of that deal have been kept under wraps, until now. • Issue#171937: Android - Default from Google search bar

Every time i use the Google search bar I'm asked to select the browser the link opens in. It sets that selection as the default; but only for that specific link. I find the Google search bar to be convenient but it's become an annoying pain to select the browser each time i click a link from Google.

  • Issue#752900: Amazon - Kindle REFUSES to use Google as default search engine!

Ok, this is is seriously pissing me off. I've gone into the settings for Silk SEVERAL times and changed my default search engine to Google, but when I enter a search from the search bar on the home screen, my Kindle STILL USES BING. If I go through the annoyance of opening Silk browser beforehand and searching directly from the omni-bar in the browser, it displays Google results. But, as I said, when I perform a search from the search bar on the home screen, it is still displaying Bing results. Getting very pissed. Yahoo works fine both ways, and of course Bing works fine. Google search engine the only one I'm having trouble with, and I'm pretty sure it's because of the OS. Can someone help me resolve this issue before I smash this Kindle with a hammer? Because I use the search bar constantly, probably more than ten times a day, and I'm not emotionally prepared to view results from Bing nor Yahoo on a regular basis. I'm seriously very close to chucking this tablet. Reply to this post.

  • Issue#171038: Skype - complaint: Make Bing your default search engine

Pre-ticking boxes is a well know psychological trick to get users to mistakenly change settings. It is generally used by makers of disreputable software or malware to get users to agree to something by subterfuge. It is not what I would expect from a Microsoft company. If people wanted Bing, they would be using it. If you insist on having the option on your install screens, at least make these opt-in checks. I know that you can un-tick the boxes, but that is not the point - read 'Nudge' by Thaler and Sunstein for details about how manipulative pre-ticking boxes for people is.This sort of practice tarnishes your reputation.
