Issue#52708: Radio Control - First time flying a warbird

  • Wow. I can say I have come pretty far. I flew my first warbird today after just starting to fly RC airplanes in January. Full disclosure: I flew RC heli's for about 5 months before realizing my true calling.

I found a local guy selling a Durafly P-40N on craigslist about a week and a half back. Te guy was asking $100 for a PNP bird. I went over and looked at it and dropped him a C-note. It seemed like a good deal. The bird wasn't without problems. Welcome to the world of buying used planes. The rudder servo needs to be replaced but its working. I had to change the push rods for the empennage as well as the clevis'. The servo box needed some work because the hole for the rudder was busted. I made a little 1/2x1/2 tab and Ca'ed them onto the existing servo box. This caused the rudder servo to sit up about 1/8th of an inch and caused some major binding when running from the servo to the tail wheel then onto the rudder. I had an EZ-Link on the servo and on the tailwheel assembly. I ended up taking the EZ-link off of the tailwheel and just running a Z-bend. It works perfect other than I didn't get it lined up perfect. There is a slight cant in the wheel that causes the plane to track right. Thats ok to me, it helps with the torque.

Once I got all of this straitened out I wanted to add a gyro. I opted for the Hobby Eagle A3 Super II. Its cheap... Let me rephrase that, its inexpensive! And works freaking awesome. I plan on getting more. The programming took maybe 5 mins and I was ready to go. I had to do some digging around to figure out how to get power from another channel OTHER than the aux1 and finally figured out how to do that. Now I can set up the flaps and have the gyro on "Normal" mode all the time. For about $25 its a steal and you should get one.

My maiden was pretty awesome. I love this thing! Winds were about 3-5MPH sustained with the occasional gust. My tail wheel set up work flawlessly. It is canted ever so slightly to the right but that really helped with the torque. My first attempt at a take off ended with me nosing over off the runway... Whoops, not authoritative enough on the rudder. No damage but the spinner rubs a little now. I wiped off the prop and my friend (expert flier) asked if he could take it off for me. I said sure. He got it in the air and after a few clicks of trim handed it over to me. I didn't do anything fancy, just high and low pattern work with the gear down the whole time. My timer went off at 5 minutes and I decided to bring it in. I am running 3S 2200's BTW. I lined it up and gently kissed the concrete. Perfect landing! And the battery was at over 50%! I reset the timer to 6 minutes.

My second flight I was determined to get the take off right. I took 10 or so minutes to clear my thoughts and was ready. I slowly advanced the throttle, it started tracking right (because of the slight cant in the tailwheel). Adjust rudder, increase throttle, now its starting to track left, readjust rudder, more throttle and wow! She is airborne! Bring in more throttle and get her to traffic pattern high and bring up the gear! Flawless. I did a couple of high speed passes and some slow speed passes. I don't have the flaps set up because I just figured out how to get power from the Rx to my Hobby Eagle A3 Super II from some place other than the AUX1 channel. So all of my take off and landings were without flaps.

This plane flies great! The Hobby Eagle makes it fly real nice in the slight wind conditions that I had. I never tried the Auto Level mode but I am sure it works great. I was more focused on seeing how it flies. It will carve out some turns if you want it to and it will be a gentle lady if you respect the tip stall. I am pleased with my first large scale warbird! (only other warbird I have is a UMX P-47 which is a LOT of fun). After my second flight of with no aerobatics the battery registered 45%. I figure I can safely get 7 minutes out of the bird with some WOT and some scale maneuvers. I was really surprised how fast it was on 3S because everyone seems to run 4S.

In conclusion as a n00b if you some how don't end up with an Eflite bird this wouldn't be a bad option on 3S and with a few taildragger takeoff and landings under your belt. I don't know that trike experience would help you much here. Once its in the air it flies real nice.

    Can't wait to fly again!

  • Issue#896990: Radio Control - Flying 3D X8 and the FlyShark S8 Assistant Issue

With the help of the RC Groups forum members, I think I may have my X8 in a ready to fly condition. I recently upgraded the firmware to 1.49 using the S8 Assistant, and after the update, everything seems to function, acquired 8 satellites, and the functions all seem to be working properly. However, one thing that I cannot figure out is why the satellite map in the S8 Assistant shows China, and not the USA. Does anyone know why or have an explanation for that? Thanks in advance.

  • Issue#899370: Radio Control - Anyone Else Spend More Time Fixing Their Quad Than Flying It?

Hmmm... So over the past few months I've probably spent 5 times as much time fixing quads than flying them. I'm just curious if anyone else has had similar experiences where you spend more time on the bench than in the air. My experience over the past few months so far, I think I'm trending at getting about 4 packs in between serious crashes. - Fly first pack LOS, quad loses orientation and I cut the motors and drop it at the end of a field, gets dragged off into the woods by a Fox as I'm chasing after it never to be seen again... 10 days grounded. - Fly for a day then crash at 60mph into a concrete wall.. 7 days grounded waiting for parts. - Get brand new quad, crash twice into a tree and I figured out later it snagged some wiring. Flying 100 feet in the air practicing back flips when the motors cut out, plowed nose first in a full speed dive into soft dirt, leaving a 5" crater, nose breaks off and quad is lodged in the dirt... 8 days grounded. - Flying above a parking lo

  • Issue#1003285: Radio Control - Flying Cx-10w quadcopter first time

Anyone experienced this cheerson cx-10w nano quadcopter?. I did my first flight today and it seems one must have initial flying skills to start this as hobby... This nano quadcopter has integrated FPV camera and it binds with your smartphone (iphone in my case) via an app ...u can see live streaming on your phone while flying. Since its a very tiny device so controlling is a bit of challenge...hit the wall of my garage couple of times and u can see twisted propellers in the pictures... Any one who has done a stable flight , please share ur experience. Thanks

  • Issue#1078691: Radio Control - Flying with others for the first time

Last night, for the first time, I flew with some other quad pilots who I had met on FB. In addition to being the first time I'd flown with other pilots, it was the first time I'd flown at a spot that had trees. I normally just fly in an open field with, at best, some low bushes. - I'd never seen quads being flown aggressively from 3rd person view. I've only seen my own FPV and FPV videos. Man these things COOK! You don't get a real perspective on speed until you see it from LOS with someone else flying. And the forward tilt is extreme! They almost look like they're flying vertically. - Tuning my goggles to someone else's channel while they flew was wild. I've watched tons of FPV video but seeing it "live" was very different. It was also surprisingly disorienting. I can watch FPV videos all day long but standing with goggles on while someone else flies made me a bit wobbly! - I can't talk while I fly. - 4S is where it's at. This was the first time my 3s quad felt slow. I

  • Issue#890: Radio Control - Winter Storm Jonas / Flying the Chroma

I had a blast today flying in Winter Storm Jonas. Took my Blade Chroma out with a brand new GB203 gimbal. I'm impressed as hell with the stability and results from this gimbal and GoPro Hero 4k Black. Before I took off, I used scotch tape and sealed up all of the vents AND the power switch on the Chroma. I'm not sure if this is necessary, but I feel like covering those vents is a good idea as you can see some parts of the fc board are exposed in the front at the very least. Other than that, the Chroma is a trooper in Stability Mode in this type of weather. I was running the CamCarbon props by Carolina Dronz which most definitely helped out. You can see the wind pushing against me, but this video is amazingly stable for the conditions... I hope to do a lot more videos in the future. • Issue#1923: Radio Control - SW capacitor/ librepilot issue HELP!!

Hi all, I have a problem.. My Eachine landed from about a metre flat on its belly and the SW capacitor came off, and one off the connecting pins broke so I replaced with a 470uf 25v from maplin.. LibrePilot takes longer than usual to choose the FC in wizard then on setting the motor start points that SW motor runs seemingly slower and rattly, then on saving the wizard settings it gets to preparing mixer settings and crashes there. That's about as much info as I have as I'm new to this and only had my Eachine 2 days Thanks in advance

Quotes from Billy Connolly.. :D Enjoy! http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comedy/co...-great-quotes/ One I particularly like... Quote: "Life is a waste of time. Time is a waste of life. Get wasted all the time and you'll have the time of your life." The Snow-plough driver quote seems quite appropriate for some of our American friends, at the moment..

  • Issue#2683: Radio Control - Gearbest 2Axis gimbal MODIFICATION for Chimera Flying Wing

Hi guys, There are a few, but not many gimbals available specifically for the Mobius Actioncam. Gearbest.com was kind enough to send me a 2-Axis gimbal to review and play with. Here is a link to the product: http://goo.gl/OYCJEM This gimbal is made specifically for a Hubsan X-4 and X-8 multirotors, and mean to hold a GoPro camera - and I do not own either of those products, so I am going to modify this gimbal to hold a Mobius action-cam, and be mounted to my Chimera flying wing platform for some super smooth stabilized footage. Stay tuned for pictures and moficiation process.

Hi! i am very new to Quad flying and am having a little trouble with my FPV Setup, i purchased the Quanum V2, http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...Tx_Rx_Set.html, and the Quanum Nova quad, been having heeps of fun flying but when i tried to get the goggles to work i was getting less than 15m without the no signal warning, i have the Transmitter mounted inside the quad with the antenna poking out between the two front rotors, ( i can post a pick if you need) is there something interrupting the signal because of this mounting point? when i am next to the drone the signal is clear as day without much static at all, any ideas why this is happening? Thanks!!!

  • Issue#5103: Radio Control - challenge: student level quick build time free flight glider

My end goal is to have a kit that is very quick and easy to build for students so they can be up in the air quickly and have some room to experiment. At the end I'd hope there would be something with some half-decent performance, maybe 30 - 60 second flight times? In the meantime I've been playing around with a couple of designs, one which is to be a thermal glider with an inexpensive de-thermalizer timer using about half a sheet of readi-board and another which is a small 12" rubber band launched glider. Both have about a 20 - 30 minute build time. Nothing I've built so far can get more than a 15 second flight in dismal winter weather, but I'm getting really light wing loading of less than 0.7 oz. / sq. ft. If there is interest I can post what I have so far. I'm hoping there might be enough interest for others to contribute ideas and designs :)

  • Issue#7827: Radio Control - Eachine H8 mini problem - flying uncontrollably

Hello, I've recently received an h8 mini, but it has a serious problem maintaining stability and it's flying uncontrollably. It also doesn't sound right, as If something is crooked (I made sure the props don't touch the guards). You can see the problem on this video: Eachine H8 mini problem (0 min 25 sec) I took the quadcopter apart (to check if something is loose or not soldered right) and reassembled it. It flew much better for a few minutes, but then started behaving erratically again. It's also not a transmitter problem as it functions the same with the bayangtoys x9 tx. I contacted banggood, and they offered to send me a new receiver board. I have a feeling a new board won't help, as the problem seems to be more of a mechanical nature than electronical. I wanted to hear your opinion, because I don't want to wait another month or two to get the new board just to find out it does not solve the problem. What do you think I should do? Thanks in advance, Lior.

  • Issue#8246: Radio Control - Uncontrollable Yaw Issue

I have an F330 clone frame that has an Openpilot CC3D FC, HK 25/30a ESC's and Propdrive 28-26s 1200kv motors. I hooked it up to the Openpilot GCS and went through the FC and transmitter configuration steps. The problem is that after arming and taking off, it wants to continually yaw left and kind of bounce up and down making it hard to control. I checked most settings and everything looks fine including the motor RPM speed sliders as well as I completed the ESC calibration and double checked that the props are on correctly. I also looked on my Turnigy 9xr controller settings and it looks like it is correct. I am not sure what to do next. This is not my first quad but I am clueless what to do next. Everything is new with the exception of the ESC's and motors. Thanks! John

  • Issue#11626: Radio Control - Issue with TDisaster

Just wanted to get the word out- I bought a battery from TDisaster. He was extremely responsive on the day I pm'ed him about buying the battery and was quick to take my money, but all but disappeared afterwards. Payment sent on 1-11-16. About a week after I sent payment, 1-17-16, I sent him a PM asking for the tracking info because I should have received the battery by then. A couple days went by then he said that he was too busy and didn't get it out but that he would do so shortly. That was a week and a half ago and I still have no battery and he hasn't replied to a PM in ~four days. It's now 1-26-16 and still no battery or response. Here is the original FS thread http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2569355 I'll update if I hear anything or if there ends up being a positive resolution. Just wanted to get the word out since he has some other stuff for sale too. EDIT: And now his PM box is full.

  • Issue#11927: Radio Control - SkyRC Quattro B6AC issue

This is the second SkyRC Quattro B6AC I have and both seem to have the same issue. One of the four charging circuits has given up the ghost. This one pictured the top right gave up and the second the bottom right. I emailed SkyRC and of course no response to 2 emails for customer service. I opened up the unit itself in hope it was four separate charging circuits boards and I could find a replacement or combine for one functioning charger. Question is anyone had this issue with this brand or Hitech they are identical in every way. If so were you able to trouble shoot the problem? Attached Thumbnails Views: N/A

An amazing home built B-17 Flying Fortress Slope Glider. Kevin W said he cut it out 10 years ago and just the other week decided to put it together for this years annual meet on the Tapps Ridge! As can be seen in the video it flew absolutely magnificently and Kevin was a very happy flyer when it finally touched down. Kev also mentioned he might fit some retracts for next year so he can just land on the roadway LOL! So sit back and take in the great flight and views of this beautiful B-17 Flying Fortress and the area we call Tapps! Thanks for watching! cheers Chuck B-17 Flying Fortress-Maiden Flight-Australia Day 2016-Tapanappa Ridge (5 min 58 sec)

The AMA District 1 (New England) is in a Battle to preserve the hobby of Flying ANY type of RC Model Aircraft.... This is NOT about just "Drones" these rules would apply to ANY RC Model Aircraft. It seems the "Live Free or Die" state of New Hampshire is unfortunately leading the charge.....not doubt other New England states will follow if Senate Bill is passed. This would kill the Hobby of RC Flying in this region.. Please read....I am not the author of the text below, just passing this information along. -mike- --------------------------- Last year several AMA members and I were successful in preventing House Bill HB602 from being passed. You may recall that this bill in Line # 35 and 36 section 644-A: 4 Airport Prohibition stated "No government or person shall operate a drone at an altitude below 400 feet within 5 miles of any airport in this state." Passage of this bill would have prevented five AMA clubs/members and possibly many more non charted lo
